Why Is My Air Conditioning Not Working?

View these common air conditioning problems caused by neglect and age of your AC.

Dirty Air Filters

Home air filters keep dirt and dust from damaging you’re A/C unit. Not changing or dirty filters causes the unit to ice up literally to a block of ice and then will stop working. The frequency of when to change the filters will tend to vary according to how much dust, smoke, etc. is in your home.  To be safe, the minimum is at least every three months but monthly if you are susceptible to dust, pollen, smoke, etc. But in an environment like Las Vegas where you spend a lot of time indoors during the heat and the poor air quality its best to check each month in the summer to see if your air filters are dirty. When the filters are clean it allows your air conditioning system to cool your home more effectively and efficiently.  If not, lack of air flow will cause one of the most important parts of your air conditioner, the cooling coil – to freeze up.

Lack Of Air Conditioning Maintenance

Normal wear and tear from heavy usage of air conditioning is bound to happen living in a hot climate like Las Vegas. A common air conditioning problem is run caps wearing out because of frequency of use of the air conditioning unit. It’s very important to get at least yearly maintenance or 2 times a year maintenance (1 for heating and 1 for air conditioning). This will help catch the wear and tear of your AC unit over the years of keeping you cool. Catching air conditioning problems early allows you to save money in the long run and you can rest assured you won’t be without air during the summer heat. Thermostat That’s Old Or Dysfunctional

This is the brains of your HVAC system in that it tells the unit how much to work to keep your home cool.  The science of the thermostats have now provided us many new varieties of thermostats that are definitely more functional and user friendly.  If your thermostat is not sending the right information to the unit, then this could affect how cool your home is being kept. Consider upgrading to a new smart thermostat like Nest.

Low Refrigerant

If you’re wondering “why is my air conditioner not blowing cold air?” this may be the answer. The refrigerant is the chemical that cools the air within your air conditioning system.  Reduced levels of refrigerant could imply a leak or problem with the refrigerant system of your unit.  This will cause the compressor motor to over-heat and even suffer irreparable damage.  This is rarely the homeowner’s fault and 90% of the time it suggests that there is a “leak” in the system requiring a certified AC technician to perform a leak search and repair.  Because of EPA guidelines, due to global warming, air conditioning companies can no longer simply add more refrigerant because this would allow more of the refrigerant to escape into the air.

Outside Fan Not Working Or Is Not Functioning Correctly

The outside fan is responsible for conveying the heat from your home to the outside air.  If that fan on the outside unit doesn’t perform correctly, proper heat transfer cannot take place and the compressor of your unit will trip the safety overload breaker to your unit.  Worse yet, it will cause your unit to “freeze up” and it may cause irreparable internal damage to the compressor. Other things that will affect the fan would be the lack of power, contactor problems or even a faulty thermostat.  Remember, the outside condenser must have nothing around it that would impair air flow – such as shrubs, garbage cans, etc.

Faulty Wiring

Shotty, haphazard or uncertified air conditioner wiring is risky and a possible fire hazard. Bad wiring can prevent the system from getting sufficient power or can trip your breaker.  Also, watch out for various “varmints ” that like to chew on the wiring to your unit. Make sure your animals don’t have access to the unit on the ground outside your home. Dogs have been known to chew on the wiring as well.

Obstructed Air Conditioning Unit

According to Energy Star, airflow problems can reduce your air conditioning efficiency by up to 15%. Make sure the area surrounding your AC unit is clear from growing plants and debris. Also make sure children don’t put their bikes or anything else up against the unit or putting rocks on the unit top that may later fall in and cause your air conditioning problems.

  1. Thanks for pointing out that if that fan on the outside AC unit doesn’t perform correctly, proper heat transfer cannot take place and the compressor of your unit will trip the safety overload breaker to your unit. My air conditioning is broken and I think it might be a problem with the fan because I don’t think it will even turn on right now so maybe something happened with the breaker too. Either way, I think I’m going to call residential AC services to come look at it because I can’t live much longer without my AC working.
