HVAC energy saving tips to maximize your HVAC system efficiency and energy usage. Heating tips and air conditioning tips plus much more!

Schedule annual maintenance for your HVAC system

  • A seasonal tune-up will maximize efficiency, keep equipment in peak working order, improve comfort and virtually eliminate costly repairs

Install a programmable thermostat

  • A programmable thermostat will adjust your HVAC system to fit your schedule, lowering and raising temperature settings when you are typically away from home or asleep

  • You’ll save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by turning your thermostat back seven to ten degrees Fahrenheit from it normal setting for eight hours a day

Change filter at least every month depending on usage

  • A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool—wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system—leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure

Replace old inefficient HVAC systems with new energy efficient units

  • Consider installing ENERGY STAR® qualified heating and cooling equipment if your HVAC unit is more than 10 years old
  • Replacing an old air conditioner with a high efficiency unit (new air conditioners use up to 40% less electricity than older models)

Get your HVAC unit properly installed by a professional & trusted heating and cooling company like Gibson Air

  • Improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30% —costing you more on your utility bills and possibly shortening the equipment’s life.

Air Conditioning Tips To Save Energy

  • Be sure your air conditioner is not blocked. A free flowing air conditioner operates most efficiently Be sure the return air grill inside your house is not blocked by furniture or other items

  • Keep heat out of your home by closing blinds, shades and draperies that cover windows facing the sun. Close coverings on east-facing windows in the morning and west-facing windows in the afternoon

  • Keep your outdoor air conditioning unit cooler by planting trees or shrubs that provide shade but still allow air to flow around the unit. By properly shading the area, your system can perform up to 10% more efficiently

The following tips can help you save money on energy costs during the warm weather!

  • close shades, blinds and drapes to block the sun from overheating your house during the Summer months

  • Try to wash and dry clothes, iron and cook in the morning or later in the evening

  • Clean air filters during Summer
    • Dirty air filters can restrict air flow and compromise performance

  • Set your ceiling fan for summer months
    • In the summer, ceiling fans should rotate counterclockwise to push cool air down to the floor

  • Set thermostat at 78°F or higher in the summer
    • you can save 6-8% of your cooling costs for each degree above 78

  • Open shades, blinds and drapes during Winter months to gain the sun’s heat

  • Change your ceiling fan direction for warm winter comfort
    • In the winter you should rotate clockwise at a low speed to pull cool air up

  • Set thermostat at 68°F or lower in the winter

  • Put an insulating blanket on your water heater

  • If you have a fireplace, keep the damper closed when you’re not using it, and use a glass door to minimize the amount of heat that escapes up the chimney

Air Sealing & Insulation Tips to Save Energy:

  • Caulk, seal, and weather-strip around all seams, cracks and openings to protect against drafts. Pay special attention to windows and exterior doors
  • When replacing windows, choose a double-pane, solar-control low-E, argon gas-filled, wood or vinyl frame window
  • You should add insulation to your attic if you do not have a R-36 rating or better

Appliances & Electronic Tips to Save Energy:

  • Unplug appliances, lights, TVs, computers, etc. when not in use
  • Power strips completely cut power to any device plugged into them when switched off. So, when you turn the power strip button off, the devices are not consuming energy in standby mode
  • Replace appliances that are over 7 years old with Energy Star appliances. Energy Star-qualified products use less energy and usually offer more features than non-qualified products
  • Activate your computer’s sleep mode when you leave your desk. This reduces electricity consumption to less than 5% of full power
  • Do laundry and other energy intensive chores in the morning hours or late at night when overall energy usage is lower
  • Use a cold water detergent and try using the cold water washing cycle. It does make colors last longer
  • Install efficient shower heads that use 2.5 gallons per minute or less

Lighting Tips to Save Energy:

  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR® compact fluorescent (CFLs) or light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, which use up to 75% less energy
  • Turn off lights whenever possible. Just a few hours a day over a year’s time can really make a difference
  • Dust your light bulbs and clean the fixture covers to get the most light out of your fixtures
  • Install motion sensors in places you might often forget to turn the light off yourself

Water Saving Tips in Las Vegas:

  • Keep showers under 15 minutes
  • Switch to low-flow toilets, faucets and shower heads
  • Turn down the frequency of your sprinklers
  • Make sure your dishwasher is full before running it

Las Vegas HVAC Companies, How To Choose The Right One?

There are a lot of air conditioning and heating companies in Las Vegas – especially the “one truck” companies that seem to appear in Las Vegas during the summer and then “disappear” shortly thereafter. Choosing the right HVAC company for service or new HVAC installation can save money and lots of headaches. Remember that price shouldn’t be the only item when deciding. Tips To Find The Best Air Conditioning and Heating Company In Las Vegas: Look at the reputation of the manufacturer and the warranty that is offered, review your potential HVAC company with the contracting board and the Better Business Bureau. Review their web presence and see what their customers say about them and the service they provide. Don’t be afraid to get more than one bid. Do not sign any document the HVAC Company asks you to sign except for giving them permission to evaluate your system. Too many companies are now asking the customer to sign a document that allows them not only to check out your system but to also check your credit rating even before they have evaluated your system.   Gibson Air Conditioning and Heating has been serving the greater Las Vegas/Clark County area since 1996. Jack and Gaylee Close bought the company in 2005. Jack and Gaylee are both LVHS graduates and prior to purchasing the company, Jack was a prominent Physical Therapist in Las Vegas for over 42 years.  Jeffrey Rozycki, who was a technician for Gibson Air when it was purchased by the Close family, was brought on board in 2014 when his company, Buster Mechanical, was purchased by Gibson Air and he now serves...

If you are missing a panel (possibly due to the strong Vegas winds) or if the panel is misaligned, this could cause potential risks for both you and the operation of the equipment. If the panel covering the electrical connections is missing or out of place, you should call a qualified HVAC technician for an assessment before starting your system.   Clean the area around your air conditioner You’ll want to make sure the area around your air conditioner unit is clear and free from debris. Why Clean Air Conditioning Condenser Coils in Las Vegas

Why Clean Air Conditioning Condenser Coils in Las Vegas

Why Should You Clean Your Air Conditioning Coils? Air Conditioning systems are like cars. During the warm months, through labor day in and day out without regular care, they lose their ability to keep you cool. A critical component of every air conditioner is the condenser coil. When the condenser coil gets dirty, it causes problems that affect performance and can damage other parts of the system. We currently have a coupon for HVAC Maintenance with a chemical coil cleaning!   What Are Condenser Coils? Condenser coils are situated in the outdoor unit of your air conditioner. As refrigerant removes heat from your home, it turns into a gas. It then travels to the condenser coils. As the refrigerant gas passes over the coils, it is cooled and changes back into a liquid. It is then recirculated back into your home to cool the air and remove more heat.   Benefits Of Getting Your Air Conditioning Condenser Coils Cleaned Keeping the evaporator and condenser coils of an air conditioning system clean and free of foreign materials can do more to maintain operating efficiency and increase equipment life than any other preventive maintenance procedure. Put simply, a regularly scheduled coil cleaning will help keep your equipment running better and longer.   What Happens To My AC When The Condenser Coils Get Dirty? Condenser coils get dirty in the process of cooling the refrigerant. Dirt from the air outside is absorbed into the outdoor cooling unit and begins to build up on the coils. The bigger the buildup, the harder it is for the cooling system to perform. Electric bills increase and indoor...

WINTER TIPS THAT WILL KEEP YOU WARM For most regions of the country, fall means forgetting about heating and air conditioning for a while. Crisp mornings and moderate temperatures during the day create a comfortable existence with lower-than-average energy usage. Right around the corner, however, is the first frost of winter and the promise of higher energy bills. Is there anything you can do now to impact your energy usage? “Absolutely,” says Paul Trotter, brand manager for American Standard Heating and Air Conditioning. “The transition period between the beginning of fall and the first days of cold weather is the perfect time to evaluate your home’s energy efficiency and weather resiliency, and service your heating system. All of these things, along with following a few other simple recommendations, can impact your energy usage.” MAKING YOUR HOME AS ENERGY-EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE DURING WINTER Install storm or thermal windows and doors. Caulk and weather strip all windows and doors. Ensure your fireplace has a tight-fitting damper. Tape and seal leaks in your duct system and coil enclosure. Consider adding insulation to your duct system. For extremely cold climates, wrap your water heater with an insulated water heater blanket. Seal gaps between heated and unheated spaces. This may be around pipes, ducts, fans or vents. Consider installing ceiling fans with reversible motors. In the winter, fans push warm air that collects at ceiling level back down into the room. Ensure your fireplace has a tight-fitting flue damper. Make sure the registers (vents) in your home are open and not obstructed by furniture. Set your thermostat to “Continuous Fan” to continuously circulate the...

Air Quality Tips

Would you like to breath easier with less allergens and dust in your home? We are all aware of the unavoidable problem we encounter outdoors with air quality and pollution on a daily basis. We may not have much control of the outside air but what about the air in your home? We really need to take a hard look at the indoor pollution problem inside our homes, schools, and workplaces. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the air inside the average home is up to five times more polluted than the air outside. Nearly every home (96%) had at least one indoor quality problem and 86% had high levels of particles and bioaerosols. With the Las Vegas weather now changing to spring, the flowers and trees are blooming and the pollen count increasing almost daily. If you are having allergic responses to this pollen increase, you need to know that there are methods, we at GIBSON AIR CONDITIONING, can do about the indoor pollution in your home. By reducing the pollen, dust, pet dander, dirt mites, bacteria and viruses in your home, we can greatly improve the indoor air you breathe. Here are a few slight examples of how we can help you with what specifically affects you: ODORS AND CHEMICAL VAPORS An air-purification system can be attached to your HVAC unit. Contaminants are removed and destroyed before air is re-circulated in your home. SMALL, RESPIRABLE PARTICLES AND BIOAEROSOLS/MICRO-ORGANISMS An air filtration system will help to combat indoor pollution capturing even the smallest contaminants and keeping them from re-circulating back into the home’s airflow. Germicidal lights can...

Energy Saving Facts

According the US Department of Energy, 25 -40% of the energy used for heating and cooling a home is wasted.  When your HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t work as hard to reach set temperature levels, and as a result, less energy is consumed.

When replacing air conditioners or furnaces, look for ENERGY STAR labeled products. Replacing HVAC equipment that is more than ten years old with Energy star models can cut your annual energy bill into the hundreds.

Programmable thermostats will shave about 10 percent off of your heating and cooling bills, says the Alliance to Save Energy. The average annual savings is about $100

About 47% of the average household’s annual energy bills stem from heating and cooling, according to the U.S. Department of Energy

According to the EPA, an annual HVAC tune-up and inspection is one of the most important strategies for reducing energy consumption in your HVAC system. Just like a car, even the newest, most efficient HVAC system will decline in performance without regular maintenance from a qualified professional
