More than a matter of degree, how your air feels involves a combination of factors, like how much moisture is in the air. Energy efficiency also comes into play, especially when you consider how you feel every month when you see your utility bill. If it's high, you're anything but comfortable.

Efficiency

When you live in a warm region, you probably feel the pinch of high utility bills. As energy costs continue to rise, it may be time to consider ways to make your home more efficient.

Reduce the cost of your air

One option that can have an immediate impact on your home's energy use is upgrading to a high-efficiency heating and cooling system, especially if your current equipment is more than 12 years old. An ENERGY STAR® qualified furnace from the Dave Lennox Signature® Collection, for instance, can save you hundreds of dollars each year, compared to standard-efficiency equipment. And it may make you eligible for a tax credit.

Another energy-saving solution is to pair a high-efficiency electric heat pump with a gas furnace. Called dual fuel, this system minimizes heating costs by seamlessly alternating between the two energy sources, depending on outdoor conditions.

Energy-Efficiency Tax Credit

Tax break for select Lennox equipment

In February 2009, President Obama rolled out a stimulus package entitled the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that expands tax credits for energy-efficient appliances and home improvements. As a four-time winner of the ENERGY STAR® Manufacturing Partner of the Year award—and the first and only winner in the heating and cooling industry—Gibson Air offers a complete selection of high-efficiency home comfort systems that are eligible for tax credits under the new plan.

Qualifying Heating and Cooling Products from Gibson Air

Tax credits are available at up to 30% of the cost, up to $1,500,* for:

• Furnaces such as the Lennox® G71MPP and G61MPV with energy ratings of at least 95% AFUE.
• Split air conditioners such as the XC14 with energy ratings of 16.00 SEER or higher; packaged units at 14.00 SEER and above. Our industry-leading lineup of ENERGY STAR® products includes systems with energy ratings as high as 20.50 SEER.
• Heat pumps with a minimum HSPF of 8.50 and SEER of 15.00. Lennox offers models with SEER ratings all the way up to 18.60 SEER.
• Boilers such as the Lennox high-efficiency GWB9-IH with 90% AFUE.

Note: Units must be installed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 to be eligible for tax credits.

Tax credits are available at up to 30% of the cost, with no upper limit,* for:

• Photovoltaic energy systems like the SunSource® comfort system, a first-of-its-kind system that breaks ground by drawing energy from the sun.

Electronic Air Filter

Whole House Humidifier

Lessons in productivity

Studies show office workers’ performance may suffer when they are exposed to poor indoor air quality (IAQ) and high temperatures.* Now other research is showing that school children are often trying to learn in environmental conditions even worse than those found in office buildings.**

It’s in the air

Poor office conditions can have a negative impact on employees’ productivity, researchers have found. A later study showed that environmental conditions in schools were often inadequate – and many times much worse – than those in office buildings.** In schools, common indoor air quality problems included:

• Poor cleaning practices and high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), allergens and mold
• High temperatures as a result of inadequate thermal control
• Poor HVAC maintenance
• Insufficient outdoor air ventilation
• Inadequate exhaust air flow

Subsequent experiments in six identical elementary school classrooms found that by increasing the outdoor air supply rate and reducing elevated classroom temperatures, students were able to improve their performance noticeably. The 10- and 12-year-olds completed tasks more quickly and sometimes more accurately when environmental conditions improved.†

Solutions for better schools

Gibson Air & Lennox have found that many school districts are taking advantage of opportunities to improve their buildings’ IAQ by installing high-performance HVAC systems incorporating innovative fresh-air ventilation technology, humidity control and zoning systems. Often, systems such as L Series® rooftop units from Lennox are also ENERGY STAR® qualified, so they’ll help schools control energy usage and reduce total cost of ownership of the HVAC systems.

New tools for schools

While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says nearly 30,000 schools are taking effective action to protect the students’ learning environment, it estimates more than 75% of schools don’t have adequate IAQ management programs in place. According to the agency, the number of schools with adequate IAQ programs can be doubled by 2010 with a committed network of school leaders across the United States.‡

To that end, the EPA has released a new program that combines best practices from a national survey of more than 800 schools and their IAQ management practices, as well as 200 of the applicants for the EPA’s annual Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools awards.
