Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency

These tips are designed to help you choose effective ways to reduce your energy bills. Air conditioning tips to save energy, air conditioning tips for summer, HVAC maintenance tips and more!

HVAC energy saving tips to maximize your HVAC system efficiency and energy usage. Heating tips and air conditioning tips plus much more!

Schedule annual maintenance for your HVAC system

  • A seasonal tune-up will maximize efficiency, keep equipment in peak working order, improve comfort and virtually eliminate costly repairs

Install a programmable thermostat

  • A programmable thermostat will adjust your HVAC system to fit your schedule, lowering and raising temperature settings when you are typically away from home or asleep

  • You’ll save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by turning your thermostat back seven to ten degrees Fahrenheit from it normal setting for eight hours a day

Change filter at least every month depending on usage

  • A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool—wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system—leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure

Replace old inefficient HVAC systems with new energy efficient units

  • Consider installing ENERGY STAR® qualified heating and cooling equipment if your HVAC unit is more than 10 years old
  • Replacing an old air conditioner with a high efficiency unit (new air conditioners use up to 40% less electricity than older models)

Get your HVAC unit properly installed by a professional & trusted heating and cooling company like Gibson Air

  • Improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30% —costing you more on your utility bills and possibly shortening the equipment’s life.

Air Conditioning Tips To Save Energy

  • Be sure your air conditioner is not blocked. A free flowing air conditioner operates most efficiently Be sure the return air grill inside your house is not blocked by furniture or other items

  • Keep heat out of your home by closing blinds, shades and draperies that cover windows facing the sun. Close coverings on east-facing windows in the morning and west-facing windows in the afternoon

  • Keep your outdoor air conditioning unit cooler by planting trees or shrubs that provide shade but still allow air to flow around the unit. By properly shading the area, your system can perform up to 10% more efficiently

The following tips can help you save money on energy costs during the warm weather!

  • close shades, blinds and drapes to block the sun from overheating your house during the Summer months

  • Try to wash and dry clothes, iron and cook in the morning or later in the evening

  • Clean air filters during Summer
    • Dirty air filters can restrict air flow and compromise performance

  • Set your ceiling fan for summer months
    • In the summer, ceiling fans should rotate counterclockwise to push cool air down to the floor

  • Set thermostat at 78°F or higher in the summer
    • you can save 6-8% of your cooling costs for each degree above 78

  • Open shades, blinds and drapes during Winter months to gain the sun’s heat

  • Change your ceiling fan direction for warm winter comfort
    • In the winter you should rotate clockwise at a low speed to pull cool air up

  • Set thermostat at 68°F or lower in the winter

  • Put an insulating blanket on your water heater

  • If you have a fireplace, keep the damper closed when you’re not using it, and use a glass door to minimize the amount of heat that escapes up the chimney

Air Sealing & Insulation Tips to Save Energy:

  • Caulk, seal, and weather-strip around all seams, cracks and openings to protect against drafts. Pay special attention to windows and exterior doors
  • When replacing windows, choose a double-pane, solar-control low-E, argon gas-filled, wood or vinyl frame window
  • You should add insulation to your attic if you do not have a R-36 rating or better

Appliances & Electronic Tips to Save Energy:

  • Unplug appliances, lights, TVs, computers, etc. when not in use
  • Power strips completely cut power to any device plugged into them when switched off. So, when you turn the power strip button off, the devices are not consuming energy in standby mode
  • Replace appliances that are over 7 years old with Energy Star appliances. Energy Star-qualified products use less energy and usually offer more features than non-qualified products
  • Activate your computer’s sleep mode when you leave your desk. This reduces electricity consumption to less than 5% of full power
  • Do laundry and other energy intensive chores in the morning hours or late at night when overall energy usage is lower
  • Use a cold water detergent and try using the cold water washing cycle. It does make colors last longer
  • Install efficient shower heads that use 2.5 gallons per minute or less

Lighting Tips to Save Energy:

  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR® compact fluorescent (CFLs) or light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, which use up to 75% less energy
  • Turn off lights whenever possible. Just a few hours a day over a year’s time can really make a difference
  • Dust your light bulbs and clean the fixture covers to get the most light out of your fixtures
  • Install motion sensors in places you might often forget to turn the light off yourself

Water Saving Tips in Las Vegas:

  • Keep showers under 15 minutes
  • Switch to low-flow toilets, faucets and shower heads
  • Turn down the frequency of your sprinklers
  • Make sure your dishwasher is full before running it
